Do you have to take the doors off? I'm a one man show and would like to do it myself, if possible. Anyone ever done it with the doors on? It's a 1990 GMC 3500 XCAB

About the only thing I left out was knocking out the detent roller spring, because mine had already fallen out due to severe wear on the pins/bushings. I just use the door panel tool or a small pry bar to pop the spring out. You could also let it fall out on its own after you pop the pins but there's the chance it could hit you.

The hoist makes it a one man job. Otherwise you're struggling to hold it in place while you line up the pins to install them and that sucks. I can do it without the hoist if I have the door gutted - in other words no window, no inner door skin w/window regulator etc., because it's light enough to manhandle, but if the door is complete it's too heavy to wrangle and line up at the same time and you're gonna scratch up your door and fender edge.

Some people have commented that I should let a coil or so of the detent spring hang out past the jaws of the compressor, but honestly, you need all the compression you can get in order to wiggle it in there to get the spring in place. You may need to experiment with this a little. Just be careful.

Richard
Please be sure to check out my truck shop projects and remember: if I made it look easy,
it's only because you weren't here to see me kicking parts, cussing, and throwing tools.

you need a GM door spring tool to compress the door spring
Image
and tape up your fenders and door edges to keep from scratching them up..
actually I used the garage rafters tied off to the door with 2 ratchets cords to support/hold the door
with the window rolled down !!
with the help of a floor jack while bushing were replaced
I think I used a towel on top of the floor jack ,underneath the door...
Change the bushings and PINS !!!, cause they wear out also..
