I’m gearing up to do some engine work on the dually and I would like to get a few opinions.

Basically, I want something hotter than your average one ton 454, but still perform reliably “as a truckâ€Â

well i personally wouldnt buy an edelbrock carb. had nothing but problems out of my freinds. and ive heard alot of similar stories. holley carbs all the way! you should be happy with a cam/intake/carb swap. i have a few more things done to mine but im getting 12 mpg. you may be able to get 15 mpgs. ill be intersted to see if you do.

well im on the other end i like the edelbroke carbs for street driving
thar thunder carbs work good the kits thay sell you would like .


i would get the prformer rpm air gap
and matching cam

you should get 400+ hp out of it

i did that with my 1st dually and loved it now if you want a monster let me know hehehheeh

go to compcams thay have a prog that helps you pic your cam and tells you you hp and touque

oo and campy this is the moter you realy want

Well when I got my dually my idea was to build a fairly high compression engine that would run on e85. It's octane is close to 105. You could just run an alcohol carb. At the time I could get e85 at several stations around me, I don't know how it would work for you. And it was typically .50 to .75 cents cheaper than gas. But as of late a few of the stations around here have been taking out their e85 pumps, so I don't know if the network is growing or shrinking at this time. My thought was you could build a pretty good motor and actually buy cheaper gas. But I'm not sure how e85 is in your area.

Also in theory it should have lower emissions.

Actually, after reading into it a bit, it seems like one of those Edelbrock kits for a big block will work like a charm.

seems like a good choice , a fuelinjectionsystem might give you better milage and better smog , it been a while ago but i believe edelbrock made those setups too they even burn the eprom for yah you need to fill in a form thatcomes with the kit with wat you done to the engine and the eprom gets send afterwarths to youre adress you just need to put it in the management box.
it will be harder to repair on the side of the road though but will hold its tune better once its correct

A performer RPM kit would be the ticket. I have had both Edelbrock carbs and Holleys. For the street only where low end torque is important, I would pick the Edelbrock. I had a 95 Xtra cab with a mild 350 that ran mid 14's at the strip and got 18 mpg highway/13-14 mpg around town with the Edelbrock carb. I also had a Holley carb on it and it was much stronger and faster, but the mileage sucked, and with a box stock Holley, there are only so many adjustments that can be made.

You can adjust a Holley to get good power and mileage as well, but you have to buy one with adjustable circuits and it is not a cheap carb. The primaries on the Edelbrock are smaller than the secondaries and this helps with mileage and part throttle low end torque compared to the Holley's squarebore design.

With that combo, it should be a nice driver with good power, too.
