I got a PM about my engine driven compressor, so I figured I would share.

So check this out, my compressor is out of an older volvo, I want to say an 86 but I will get the specifics from my buddy as he is the one who set me up with it. When I purchased my truck it already had the EDC but I ended up throwing a rod in it and had to replace it.

This is what mine looks like...Image... and its dual piston... Wooohooo

I picked it up at the wrecking yard for $50. you will have to do a few things depending on your setup. If your running a v-belt no worries the one I have come standard with a v-belt setup; however, I have a serpentine belt so I had to get it modded by a machinist, also run a longer belt.

Mounting is takes a little fab work making your own brackets, mostly out of flat bar bent to perfection.

This compressor I am running is 9.1 cfm @ 3k rpm. It kicks the shit out of the viair 380 in my car as it is .9 cfm constant when the engine is running.

Here is tons of information on EDCs http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/york_id.html Look around... The website will describe a mod the will keep the oil from going into your air system as well as how to get the pully off without effing up the clutch system.

I will post some close ups of my setup tomorrow.

How are you setting up the oiling so the compressor doesn't croak?

Richard
Please be sure to check out my truck shop projects and remember: if I made it look easy,
it's only because you weren't here to see me kicking parts, cussing, and throwing tools.

Unless most A/C compressors that circulate the oil these actually have a reservoir for the oil. You do have to keep an eye on the oil and sometimes add a little but it is easy. There is a fill hole on either side.

I have a York 209 Big Block kit in my truck now. But pulley or pulley bearings are going out I believe cause its starting to squeak. Can order new pulley for it, but I have a brand new York 210 in my garage I think I am going to upgrade to.

have any of you guys thought about finding a way to run a york compressors off a 12 volt motor?

you could buy a winch and rob the 12v motor.(harbor freight has them cheap) take the clutch off the york. weld up a "box" out of steel to mount the york on one side. the 12 volt motor on the other. the only hard thing is trying to find a way to couple both shafts together..maybe get a 2 inch round steel bar and drill out the ends to fit both shafts...??? or a mini universal joint????

i know a company called oasis compressors already has this setup you can buy off the shelf. (cheapest used i found was 600 bucks)

i think i may do my york this way instead of mounting it to my engine.

The only downside to the York IS that if the engine isn't running, you are S.O.L. Wife just had the fuel pump die on our new to us dually, and the 480s that were under the bed are so worn out, it took a couple hours with jumpers cables on to air it up to tow it to town. Sucks, cause I was in Houston, 1000 miles from home when it happened. Then the York took a crap a couple days later. :x

We use the York 209 or 210s on most trucks and then have a 12v comp somewhere on the truck just for emergencies. I think you can get the York comps at the part stores for around $200 and they pulleys are another $50 or so.
